Choreographing Means Directing

After working for a local theatre company in it's rendition of "Addams Family" as Pugsley Addams. they approached me to be the choreographer from there musical revue. I was surprised that they asked me because i have never done anything like it before. So I called on one my friends to split the load.

I soon found out that when you are doing a revue of, musicals and pop culture songs; The Choreographer becomes the director. Anything that has music you have your hand and you have to direct. I was also the manager of the music and order songs. I had to learn how to work with little kids and honestly i was given some of the best children and parents to work with. Everyone was eager to do this show, so it made it a positive environment.

I tested out many ways to get my ideas on to paper so i could teach it to people. I had to choreograph 5-6 songs and i was in other songs that my friend was working on. I had a about 11 dances in my had by opening night. I tried notes but, found that chore can sounds like another language in moments when you are trying to teach. tried animating my ideas, which

was so much easier but took to much time. What i settled on was a mix of words and doodles. My Notebook looks like a mad man's journal but it made perfect since to me. The most stressful thing was the night before opening. after watching a performing in the first run through, we board of directors and to cut at least 5 songs from the show because of timing. it was so hard to do, but the next do we had to break the news to the cast. the good thing is that everyone was in at least three numbers, so no one was too sad about it. It was a great opportunity and gave me a taste of what it's like to be the director of a show.
