Behind the Scenes at Goodspeed

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

Being a Production Assistant at the Goodspeed Opera House was an unforgettable experience. Every year, they produce three new original musicals, which means two weeks of intensive rehearsals, casting debates, and long hours in the theatre. As someone who has always been interested in the behind-the-scenes aspect of theatre, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this process.

One of the most interesting parts of my experience was getting to be in the room for the casting debates. It was fascinating to see the different perspectives and discussions that took place as the team narrowed down their choices for each role. I also loved getting to watch three teams of writers come together and fight for the perfect cast for their show.

But my experience wasn't just limited to casting. I was able to be present for every step of the process, from rehearsals to opening night. I saw actors pushing themselves to learn new material every day and directors working to pull their scripts and music together to create a beautiful final product. It was truly incredible to watch the shows come together in such a short amount of time.

I was also lucky enough to work with some amazing mentors, Brad and Naomi, who taught me the ropes and always made me laugh, even when things were hectic. I learned so much from them and am grateful for their guidance.

Overall, being a Production Assistant at the Goodspeed Opera House was a life-affirming experience. It was a privilege to be a part of something so special and I am already looking forward to returning next year as a performer. I want to thank the entire team at Goodspeed for making it such a memorable experience.
